Your time, your skills: How to volunteer.

See how you can reach out to your older neighbors, to help them age at home and overcome loneliness, and to take simple,
practical steps that create and nurture connections among us all. It’s a world where a little means a lot.

Transportation Program:

Drive members to medical appointments; social, wellness, and cultural events; the hairdresser or barber; grocery stores and errands. Volunteers often assist with shopping and picking up prescriptions. They can provide a “second set of ears” at doctors’ offices. (Note: Volunteers who elect to be drivers must provide and maintain a current driver’s license and proof of insurance.)

In-Home Support:

Help with household organization, pet care, plant care; help manage accounts and balance checkbooks, or do minor household repairs.

Friendly Visits:

Provide joy to someone in your neighborhood or area — offering conversation and companionship; sharing stories, photos, and memories; doing a puzzle or playing a game; offering an hour or two of respite for regular caregivers.

Friendly Calls:

Check on the well-being of members who have not used services or attended programs. Spend time talking with them. Encourage them to participate more fully in Village programs and events.

Home Maintenance:

Handle tasks such as changing light bulbs, hanging pictures, checking smoke alarms, moving outdoor furniture, providing simple repairs and minor yard work.

Technology:

Assist with computers, printers, email, programmable thermostats, smart phones, and more.

Village Office Assistance:

Answer phones, match volunteers to member service requests, manage email or data entry, and more.

Village Events and Programs:

Work on annual fundraising and outreach events, participate in local parades, festivals and more.

Volunteer Your Way!

You decide which service or services you prefer, as well as the days and hours you would like to volunteer. We will provide orientation, training, and more. We value your commitment and will work with you to find the best fit for your contributions, skills, and interests.

How to become a volunteer

To ensure our members’ safety and peace of mind, the Village is open only to fully vetted volunteers. You will be asked to:

  • Complete an application (online version below).
  • Provide a minimum of two personal references (cannot include family members).
  • Agree to a background check; performed on all potential volunteers.
  • Pay a $17.00 fee for the background check, which includes a search of Delaware and nationwide criminal history, Department of Justice Watch List, sex offender list, and more.

Please be assured that all information you provide to the Village will be held in strict confidence.

If you are interested in volunteering, complete the online application below. If you have questions, please contact the Village office in your area. The numbers and email addresses are listed below.
